Lately, his inner actor had been making him look at people more closely. It fascinated David to witness what different groups did to integrate, be it Goths, athletes, sorority girls, or the townies in his dorm.
At the last party, Kat had been nervous that he’d dressed in ‘normal’ clothes. But David, being David, had made it a point to go around and introduce himself and talk to everyone—all while Kat got herself falling-down drunk again. This time, she’d lasted almost three hours before he had to take her home and pour her into bed.
Frankly, her binge drinking was an issue. The primary evidence of that was what he was doing at the moment. David had some personal rules about sex, one of which was ‘Don’t do it with someone under the influence.’ He called it his ‘Take a Drunk Girl Home’ rule. Most college guys would have succumbed when she grabbed him as he dumped her into bed.
After all, Kat was as sexy as hell and willing. That she’d fallen asleep a minute after she’d lain down, though, reinforced the rule for him. When David finally had sex with her, he wanted her to at least remember it the next day.
Yong, Kat’s roommate, had offered David a beer after he put Kat to bed. His friend Bill Callaway, a former high school and current USC football teammate, had a thing for Asian girls. Yong was Korean and ran around the apartment braless and in form-hugging shorts. If he’d not just been on a date with Kat, he might have taken a shot at hooking up with her. His friend Bill was right; there was something about Asian girls that did it for him, too.
David had shared his dilemma with Ridge. Ridge’s solution had been to make him and Cassidy come to dinner at his place the night before. To Cassidy’s glee, Ridge’s girlfriend, Penny, had wanted to set David up with one of her friends. What had Cassidy so happy was that she knew that David hated it when a woman thought she could find him a date.
Ridge had been a total dick and refused to help him out. It was probably best that he’d sided with his future wife, though.
That final thought was interrupted when nature took over. From the amount of spunk that showered his stomach and chest, David knew he had to get laid. If all else failed, he’d call Lexi.
She had obviously talked to the other women in his life and had taken a step back when he’d had his knee-jerk reaction to her declaration of love. Now that a month had passed, David had all but convinced himself that it had just been a good orgasm talking. The women all knew that given time, he would forget why he was upset with them. This upset had taken longer to get over because Lexi’s declaration had scared him. What if she really did have feelings for him beyond just friends with benefits?
If Kat didn’t come through tonight, David might have to eat humble pie and see if Lexi was up for one of their hookups.
He’d gotten word that she’d gone part-time at the management company and enrolled in classes at UCLA. He might just pop in and say hi.
There was another party at the house they’d gone to on their first date.
“Let’s grab a drink,” Kat said.
She poured two shots of something clear. David was afraid it was vodka. Every time he got drunk on that stuff, bad things happened. The most recent occasion was at a high school graduation pre-party. He’d ended up making out with someone he hadn’t remembered the next day and had at some point passed out. He had woken to find his ‘friends’ had written all over his body with a marker.
“Do they have anything nonalcoholic?” David asked.
“You’re going to make me drink alone?” Kat asked, giving him a disappointed look.
He understood her disappointment. This was college, and drinking was expected. David really didn’t want to get on Kat’s bad side tonight because he was looking to get lucky. Plus, she was hot. Sometimes you did stuff for hot girls you usually wouldn’t.
“Tell you what, Princess Peer Pressure, I’ll have one beer if that makes you feel better. That’s it,” he negotiated.
“Fine,” Kat said as she downed both shots.
It looked like they were on their way to another train wreck of a date.
Yong
You can’t always get what you want. And that’s okay. Some things in life are simply out of reach. But they gave you a reason to work towards your goal. Her roommate dating David was one of those ‘out of reach’ situations. He’d asked Kat out first, so there was nothing Yong could do about it. If you wanted your best friend to still be your friend in the morning, you didn’t try to steal her guy.
But damn, David was totally crush-worthy. Over the last two weeks, he’d shown that he wasn’t just the kind of guy you dreamt about between your thighs; he was also one of the few good ones. Kat attracted men like moths to a flame. And speaking of flames, Kat had been burned in the past. Yong was impressed that David had bypassed two opportunities to bed Kat so far.
Ordinary college boys didn’t do that, in her limited experience. If David had been the typical douche, it would have been so much easier to get him out of her mind. And the sooner she could get over this crush, the sooner she would be happy for Kat finding a great guy.
Yong’s thoughts were interrupted when she heard the front door open.
“Whoa, whoa, whoa, Babe. Watch your step,” David’s voice echoed from the hall.
Kat swayed but managed to navigate her way into the living room, where her roommate was watching a movie. David had his hands on her hips to make sure she didn’t stumble and crash to the floor.
“Hey! Kat, you okay?” Yong asked.
“Babe, you should have come tonight. We had so much fun,” Kat said and then leaned down to whisper into Yong’s ear. “And there were so many hot guys there.”
Yong was totally embarrassed for her friend because she saw David wince when he heard that.
“Come on, let’s get you to bed,” he announced.
Kat stood up and stumbled into David. She snaked her hand down to his crotch, making him flinch.
“He’s huge,” she stage-whispered to Yong.
Yong went back to watching her movie while she imagined what the two of them were up to.
Fifteen minutes later, David came out and joined Yong on the couch. He stretched out his long legs and sighed.
“That was ... uhm ... fun,” he said unconvincingly.
“Is Kat okay?”
“She’ll be fine. Nothing a good night’s sleep and a bottle of aspirin won’t fix.”
Yong glanced down at the bulge in his jeans. Seeing that short-circuited her brain.
“David, I’ve been meaning to say something to you.”
“About what?
“I’m so going to regret this later,” Yong said, then she closed the gap between them and kissed David.
She sat back to see what his reaction to that was. It freaked her out a bit when he got a faraway look and didn’t say anything for a minute. Had she ruined it with him? Would he tell Kat?
“I don’t even really know you,” David finally said.
He was right. He didn’t know her, and she didn’t know him at all. She only knew what Kat had told her, and that was from someone who was lovesick for him. For all she knew, David could be some gangbanger, or worse.
It was as if he read her mind because his lips came close to hers. Yong could see he wanted her permission to be naughty. She realized that he was dangerous. Not the ‘tie her up and throw her into the trunk of his car’ kind of dangerous. He was dangerous because he knew she would do anything to be with him.
It scared her to know that this relative stranger could scramble her brain so totally. At this point, she would gladly let him take her to her room and have his way with her, consequences be damned.
Yong was about to put an end to it when he cut off her words by running his fingertips along her jawline. When she didn’t run screaming, David guided her face to his so they could kiss.
This kiss wasn’t a tentative peck, but one where she felt the heat as he crushed his lips to hers. She felt a jolt of energy surge through her body, which caused goosebumps to form on her arms.
