In winter dark, to think I’m seeing from my hollow of our bed a long glimmer of the River Lune as Gray described it with its “hanging banks” to his sometime friend Wharton — this is nothing compared to some of the pre-dawn finds I feel sure I shall dig you up. But a likelier truth about these desomniac alarms is how these scenes respond to me.
