immediately [I'mi:dIqtlI], perfectly ['pE:fIktlI], alarmed [q'lQ:md], ink [INk]

The King immediately fell flat on his back, and lay perfectly stilclass="underline" and Alice was a little alarmed at what she had done, and went round the room to see if she could find any water to throw over him. However, she could find nothing but a bottle of ink, and when she got back with it she found he had recovered, and he and the Queen were talking together in a frightened whisper—so low, that Alice could hardly hear what they said.

The King was saying (Король говорил), `I assure you, my dear, I turned cold to the very ends of my whiskers (я уверяю тебя, моя дорогая, я похолодел до самых кончиков бакенбард; to turn — поворачивать; становиться, делаться)!'

To which the Queen replied (на что Королева ответила), `You haven't got any whiskers (у тебя нет никаких бакенбард).'

`The horror of that moment (ужас того момента),' the King went on (продолжал Король), `I shall never, NEVER forget (я никогда, никогда не забуду)!'

`You will, though (ты /забудешь/, все же),' the Queen said, `if you don't make a memorandum of it (если ты не запишешь об этом на память; memorandum — меморандум, памятная записка; to make a memorandum of smth. — записать что-л. на память).'

Alice looked on with great interest (Алиса наблюдала с большим интересом) as the King took an enormous memorandum-book out of his pocket, and began writing (как Король достал огромную записную книжку из кармана и начал писать). A sudden thought struck her (неожиданная мысль пришла ей в голову; to strike — ударять, бить; приходить в голову), and she took hold of the end of the pencil, which came some way over his shoulder (и она взялась за кончик карандаша, который немного выступал над его плечом; hold — удерживание, захват; to take hold of smth. — браться, хвататься за что-л.), and began writing for him (и начала писать за него).

assure [q'SVq], memorandum ["memq'rxndqm], enormous [I'nO:mqs]

The King was saying, `I assure you, my dear, I turned cold to the very ends of my whiskers!'

To which the Queen replied, `You haven't got any whiskers.'

`The horror of that moment,' the King went on, `I shall never, NEVER forget!'

`You will, though,' the Queen said, `if you don't make a memorandum of it.'

Alice looked on with great interest as the King took an enormous memorandum-book out of his pocket, and began writing. A sudden thought struck her, and she took hold of the end of the pencil, which came some way over his shoulder, and began writing for him.

The poor King looked puzzled and unhappy (бедный Король выглядел озадаченным и несчастным; puzzle — трудный вопрос; замешательство, смущение, недоумение), and struggled with the pencil for some time without saying anything (и сражался с карандашом некоторое время, ничего не говоря); but Alice was too strong for him, and at last he panted out (но Алиса была слишком уж сильной для него, и, наконец, он произнес, задыхаясь), `My dear (моя дорогая)! I really MUST get a thinner pencil (я действительно должен достать карандаш потоньше). I can't manage this one a bit (я никак не могу справиться с этим; to manage — руководить, управлять; справляться; a bit — немного, чуть-чуть); it writes all manner of things that I don't intend (он пишет всякие такие вещи, которые я не собираюсь /писать/; manner — метод, способ; сорт, род; all manner of things — всевозможные вещи) —'

`What manner of things (какие такие вещи)?' said the Queen, looking over the book (сказала Королева, заглядывая в /записную/ книжку) (in which Alice had put (в которой Алиса записала; to put — класть, положить; излагать, выражать /мысли, замечания и т.п./) `THE WHITE KNIGHT IS SLIDING DOWN THE POKER (белый конь скользит вниз по кочерге). HE BALANCES VERY BADLY (он сохраняет равновесие очень плохо)') `That's not a memorandum of YOUR feelings (это не запись твоих переживаний; feeling — ощущение, чувство; чувства, переживания)!'

poor [pL], puzzled [pAzld], knight [naIt], balance ['bxlqns]

The poor King looked puzzled and unhappy, and struggled with the pencil for some time without saying anything; but Alice was too strong for him, and at last he panted out, `My dear! I really MUST get a thinner pencil. I can't manage this one a bit; it writes all manner of things that I don't intend—'

`What manner of things?' said the Queen, looking over the book (in which Alice had put `THE WHITE KNIGHT IS SLIDING DOWN THE POKER. HE BALANCES VERY BADLY') `That's not a memorandum of YOUR feelings!'

There was a book lying near Alice on the table (какая-то книга лежала рядом с Алисой на столе), and while she sat watching the White King (и пока она сидела, наблюдая за Белым Королем) (for she was still a little anxious about him (потому что она по-прежнему немного волновалась за него), and had the ink all ready to throw over him, in case he fainted again (и держала чернила наготове, чтобы вылить их на него, в том случае, если он снова упадет в обморок; faint — обморок; to faint — ослабевать /от усталости, голода и т.п./; падать в обморок, терять сознание)), she turned over the leaves, to find some part that she could read (она переворачивала страницы, чтобы найти какую-нибудь часть, которую она могла бы прочесть), `— for it's all in some language I don't know (потому что все /написано/ на каком-то языке, который я не знаю),' she said to herself (сказала она себе).

It was like this (выглядело это вот так).

There was a book lying near Alice on the table, and while she sat watching the White King (for she was still a little anxious about him, and had the ink all ready to throw over him, in case he fainted again), she turned over the leaves, to find some part that she could read, `—for it's all in some language I don't know,' she said to herself.
