CHEKHOV

Ernest J. Simmons' portrait of Chekhov is a fresh and full-bodied one. Drawing upon his thorough knowledge of the man and his times and from a wealth of new material—including letters and diaries—only recently available in Russia, the biographer vividly recreates Chekhov's private life and career.
"This is a fully authenticated biography, its historical accuracy illuminated by the author's compassionate understanding of his subject."—Saturday Review
"Professor Simmons' admirable book ... must now be considered the 'definitive' biography in English."-—Chicago Daily News
"Here we have Chekhov with us: we have only to pick up the book and read him to the life. This is Mr. Simmons' fine accomplishment . . ."—Virginia Quarterly Review
"Mr. Simmons combines scholarship with a deep feeling for his subject. He is obviously very fond of Chekhov, and this gives a live and vibrant note to his narrative ... г remarkable, probably unique biography."-—Marc SlonimJV_ew_yori- T/mes

0 By chance, however, three of Avilova's letters to Chekhov from 1904 have survived and are in the Chekhov archives in the Moscow Lenin Library.
10 The first complete version of Avilova's memoirs is to be found only in the 4th edition of A. P. Chekhov v vospominaniyakh sovremennikov (A. P. Chekhov in the Remembrances of Contemporaries), Moscow, i960, pp. 200-293. There are important omissions and some tampering with the wording of the text in the previous

thought it too intimate for publication, although it is not any more intimate than others he wrote to her. Since she asserted that the originals of all his letters to her were later stolen, she obviously had to reproduce the contents of this one from memory. It is impossible to date the letter precisely.
