Екатерина привлекала к работе блестящих, храбрых людей, вызывая в них несокрушимую преданность. Настоящая транжира, она часто горевала о состоянии казны, ибо ее щедрость вошла в легенды. Она могла быть женственной и странным образом привлекательной, хотя неутомимо работала, ездила верхом, охотилась и смотрела в лицо опасностям получше иного мужчины. В век мужского доминирования она не требовала себе форы, принадлежа к слабому полу. Перефразируя высказывание, относящееся к ее сопернице из рода Тюдоров, можно сказать, что Екатерина обладала «сердцем и желудком короля». Она не отступала ни перед принятием трудных решений, ни перед их воплощением в жизнь.
Подходящей эпитафией для Екатерины могли бы послужить слова макиавеллиевского «Государя»: «Чтобы стать великим правителем, приходится порой преступать человеческие законы». Как жена, мать, бабка, регентша и королева Франции она была человеком действия, амбиций и страстей — великой правительницей и великой женщиной.
