Осмыслить — значит вновь обрести жизненную цель после травматического опыта150. Примером может служить Дейнерис, чье мучительное прошлое вдохновило ее на борьбу с работорговлей в Астапоре, Миэрине и Юнкае151.
Для Сансы и Арьи новое понимание цели включает в себя месть, но затем обе сестры приходят к мысли о более значительной цели. Арья хочет убить всех своих врагов и мучителей, постоянно твердя перечень их имен152, а впоследствии убивает сира Меррина Транта153. Санса также желает мести, однако для нее эти чувства выражаются в планах покинуть Королевскую Гавань, в сговоре с Петиром Бейлишем и в оскорблении Джоффри, когда он боится сражаться вместе со своими людьми. Жажда мести, которую испытывают сестры, нередко встречается среди жертв травмы, в частности у тех, кто потерял членов семьи в результате убийства или других форм насилия154. Персонажи книг и сериала Арья и Санса страдают от трагических утрат и в некоторой степени от потери идентичности. Тем не менее обе девушки преодолевают травмирующие переживания и приходят к посттравматическому росту. Их возраст и пол, возможно, послужили защитным фактором от развития ПТСР.
