В комедии Джона Драйдена «Амфитрион» (Amphitryon; 1690) античный бог Меркурий спрашивает у Ночи: «На что ты годишься… кроме любви и блуда?» В свете современных технологических преобразований мы сегодня могли бы задать тот же самый вопрос. Вместо того чтобы продлить ночное время, мы все больше рискуем постепенно его потерять. Небеса, наш старинный источник страха и удивления, уже затмил ослепительный блеск уличного освещения. Только в отдаленных местах можно мельком увидеть великолепие Млечного Пути. Пустое небо пришло на смену целым исчезнувшим из виду созвездиям. Напротив, причудливый мир сновидений отдалился от нас с утратой поделенного на части сна и, вместе с ним, лучшего понимания самих себя. Конечно, нетрудно представить себе то время, когда ночь исключительно в практических целях превратится в день, — поистине двадцатичетырехчасовое общество, в котором традиционные временные фазы, от утра до глубокой ночи, потеряют свои изначальные черты31. Российское правительство даже сделало попытку запустить экспериментальное «космическое зеркало», предназначенное для того, чтобы в отдельных районах трансформировать ночь в сумерки при помощи отраженного солнечного света32.
Еще не полностью утраченная красота ночного неба, циклическое чередование периодов темноты и света, peгyлярный отдых от дневных картин и звуков — все будет нарушено усилившимся освещением. Безмерно пострадают экологические системы с присущими им особенностями ночной жизни. С уменьшением темноты сильно сократится возможность уединения, интимности и размышления над собой. С приходом этого светлого дня мы потеряем живую частицу нашей человечности — столь же драгоценную, сколь и вечную. Ту, что в глубинах темной ночи дает надежду любой утомленной душе.
