На закате солнца кладбище Нуэстра-Сеньора-де-ла-Соледад — место сумрачное, но умиротворяющее. Над вымощенными булыжником дорожками проносятся ласточки, кипарисы стоят будто часовые. Далеко в заливе видны лодки ловцов сардин. Вечером, когда солнце садится, могилы точно сливаются в одно длинное поле мрамора с высеченными надписями — с историями жизней, долгих и кратких, наполненных и пустых. Один из могильных камней — особый. Он повествует о двух жизнях разом — одной короткой, печальной и настоящей, другой чуть более длинной, полностью вымышленной и странно героической. Тело, похороненное в этой могиле, было вынесено морем на берег в фальшивой военной форме и белье покойного оксфордского профессора, с любовным письмом от девушки, с которой он не был знаком, прижатым к давно переставшему биться сердцу. Никто из участников этой истории полностью не был тем, кем казался. Братья Монтегю, Чарльз Чамли, Джин Лесли, Алан Хиллгарт, Карл Эрих Куленталь и Хуан Пухоль — каждый из них родился одним человеком, а затем вообразил себя кем-то совсем иным.
Заботу о могиле № 1886 на кладбище Уэльвы в 1977 году взяла на себя комиссия Британского содружества по военным захоронениям. Благодаря «соглашению о мире» на местном уровне за могилой сейчас от имени Великобритании ухаживает немецкое консульство в Уэльве. Каждый год в апреле англичанка, живущая в городе, кладет на нее цветы.
