ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Brian Glyn Williams is professor of Islamic history at the University of Massachusetts–Dartmouth and previously taught at the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London. He has a PhD in Central Asian history and master’s degrees in Central Eurasian studies and in Russian history. He has extensive travel experience in Afghanistan, where he lived with Northern Alliance warlords, worked for the U.S. military, and tracked suicide bombers for the CIA Counterterrorism Center. Most recently he published a civilian version of a field manual he wrote for the U.S. Army’s Joint Information Operations Warfare Command titled Afghanistan Declassified: A Guide to America’s Longest War. He has also carried out fieldwork in Pakistan on the CIA’s drone assassination campaign. His forthcoming book is The Last Warlord: The Life and Legend of Dostum, the Afghan Warrior Who Led US Special Forces to Topple the Taliban Regime.
