Tommy reached his dad, the gravestone marked with Jon’s name, date of birth and death, and Beloved Father underneath.

Tommy sat down, the small bench nearby he had brought in a few years ago.

“Hi, Dad,” said Tommy. “How are you?”

The wind whipped by, and grasshoppers sang in the background.

“I’m good,” said Tommy. “I got promoted to junior partner in the firm. I told you about that rotor, right? Well, they used the design. But I’m not resting on my laurels. I’ll be partner, sooner or later. They can’t stop me.”

Tommy paused.

“And I’m not overworking myself. I know, I know, it’s in our blood. But I’ve been a lot better about limiting how much work I do. I had it out with Sarah, and she was right. She’s always right. She always sees right through me. It’s one of the reasons I love her. She doesn’t put up with my bullshit.”

The grass swayed gently in the breeze, and the summer heat beat down on Tommy.

“I have some good news,” said Tommy. “Sarah—Sarah is pregnant. She’s due in a couple months. It’s a boy,” said Tommy. He felt a tear run down his cheek, and he wiped it away. “We’re naming it Jonathan. Jon for short. Thought you would like that.”

Tommy took a deep breath. “I think we’re doing okay now, Dad. I mean, the world. Still a lot of problems, but maybe we’re turning it around. I don’t really know, but it seems better than it was. Fewer people starving, fewer people dying. That’s probably as good a metric as any, right?”

The wind picked up, and Tommy felt a cool chill in the air. Thunder rumbled in the distance.

“Think it’s going to rain. I should probably go. But it was nice to talk. I still love you, and I know you love me too.” Tommy stood up on his prosthetic legs and reached into his pocket. He pulled out a small stone, rounded marble.

“That’s from the yard, at our new house,” said Tommy. “A little memento for you. I’ll see you next year.”

Tommy walked away.
