Both commanders nodded and appeared reverent as they spoke in English, the American first, then the Australian.
“They both just emphasized that they are glad you are with them, and they look forward to more missions with you.”
The respect warmed Volkov’s heart and loosened his tongue.
“Please tell them I respect them not just for their abilities as combat leaders, which are remarkable. Also let them know that I admire their bond. What I’ve heard of their work together is commendable in the way they’ve risked their lives for each other. I can only wish to earn my way into their ranks by proving my bravery for their sakes in our future missions.”
The translator uttered half the sentiment, sought a reminder from Volkov for the second half, and then continued. After the American and the Australian digested the words, one of them, the apparent leader, replied.
“Jake says he welcomes you to the team and looks forward to the opportunity to build that bond of trust.”
The Frenchman interjected through the translator.
“Pierre says the next time he plans a mission, he’ll do his best to get you deeper into the action.”
The offer quenched a deep thirst.
“Please let him know that I appreciate that,” Volkov said. “Now that I’ve had a taste of working for this team, I’ll do whatever it takes to become a permanent member.”
