Тхераваду, а также некоторые другие школы буддизма иногда относят к "Хинаяне" (то есть, "Малой колеснице"), что, однако, вызывает негодование многих последователей школы Тхеравада, так как те считают такое сравнение с Махаяной (то есть, "Большой колесницей") оскорбительным.
