* A splinter sect of ascetics, in existence from the seventeenth to twentieth centuries, that broke off from the Russian Orthodox Church.
* At the beginning of each chapter, Tolstoy composed a summary of the verses contained in the given chapter. In distilling the Gospel teachings even further, these summaries sometimes take a slightly different approach to the content, one in which the author’s opinion is more apparent. These summaries are presented here in italics.
* Most translations present this statement as something close to “You are not yet fifty…” For some reason Tolstoy decides to make it a precise statement of age.
