Haack was commander of “Artillerie-Division zur besondere Verwendung 310.” Originally it had been a regiment staff, used to coordinate artillery from different units, but it seems to have been uprated in fall 1943. However, it remained a staff only, with no actual firing units.

This thesis was originally put forward by E. A. Shils & M. Janowitz, “Cohesion and Disintegration in the Wehrmacht in World War II,” Public Opinion Quarterly, Summer 1948, but has been subject to critisism by, for example, Omer Bartov. However, Bartov’s methodology is fundamentally flawed in several aspects. It should be noted that studies on Israeli soldiers (Ben Shalit, Konfliktens och stridens psykologi [Liber, Stockholm 1983], as well as U.S. soldiers [Stouffer, The American Soldier, vol 1 & 2], have resulted in simliar conclusions to those put forward by Shils and Janowitz.

KTB I./Pz.Rgt. 26, 10.2.44, BA-MA RH 39/599. The tank strength for the other units participating has not been possible to establish. However, given the low tank strength on 4 February and the ardous movement over muddy roads that must have caused further breakdowns, it seems unlikely that they had more than about 15 tanks and assault guns.
