The Little Honey Bears
One day in spring
In a large lair,
Three cubs were born
To a family of bears.
They cried, «We want honey!»
And made such a hubbub
Their parents dubbed them
The Honey Bear Cubs.
They rapidly grew,
Their fur a light brown,
Teddy-bear cute,
Clumsy and round.
They hit each other
In a play fight,
Rolled on the grass
And squealed in delight!
«I have an idea,»
Said one to the others,
«Let’s hunt for food.
Are you with me, brothers?»
They were. They snuck off,
Chortling and merry,
To hunt for honey
And juicy berries.
In the raspberry bushes
With rumbling tummies,
The bears ate berries.
Now they want honey!
But wait! They find pine cones,
Snatch them up and run
And throw them at each other.
The game is lots of fun!
Next they swam with ducklings,
Then finally arrived
At a clearing full of bees
And promptly smashed the hive.
Having gorged on honey,
They raced for the trees,
Stumbling over hummocks,
Escaping from the bees.
A thicket safely hid them,
But the honey had a cost.
The tired Honey Bears
Realized they were lost.
They howled for Mama
As loudly as they could,
But she didn’t hear them
Deep in the wood.
They sat by a tree stump,
Sighed and frowned,
All tuckered out
As the sun went down.
They scratched their heads
And wished they could hurry
Home to their parents
And say they were sorry.
They wished they hadn’t
Run away from home
In search of berries
And honeycombs.
Suddenly the smallest
Tumbled from the stump,
Happily yelling,
Landing thump!
«Look at the sky!
There’s the moon!
It’ll show the way!
We’ll be home soon!»
The little bears looked
On every side
And saw a hill
They recognized.
They run, forgetting
The scare they’ve had,
Pushing and shoving
To show they’re glad.
Mama Bear worries,
«Where can they be?»
So off she goes
To find the three.
She growls and howls
At the top of her voice.
The cubs come running
And all rejoice.
Papa Bear gives them
All a big hug,
Happy they’re home,
Safe and snug.
Mama is beaming.
She strokes and rubs
And cuddles and fusses
Over her cubs.
She fills them with honey.
Then each sleepy head
Says good night and Mama
Tucks them into bed.
They sweetly yawn
And dream of sunny
Fields full of berries
And hives full of honey.
The moon is shining,
The stars are bright,
The happy cubs
Sleep through the night.
