First Sergeant Ed Ryan, an experienced and combat hardened US Marine is nearing the end of his career. Although physically very fit, he has been injured and wounded once too often, leaving him with a knee that is so weak that it makes him a liability under combat pressure. The powers that be deem him medically unfit to continue as a combat NCO. Not enthusiastic over a possible desk job or even training post, his Commanding Officer is sympathetic and does not want to lose a man of his calibre and experience, so he gives Ed a period of extended leave to think through his options.Unbeknown to anyone else except a child counsellor in his past, all his life Ed has struggled with a hidden secret desire.
